Mandatory to pass an international competitive exam (known as IMAT, International Medical Admission Test), whose specifics are defined by the Italian Ministry of Education, University, and Research (MIUR).

For Degree programmes of Medicine and Surgery, Dental Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, the instructions are described in the call for application published in May / June.

The IMAT exam consists of 60 questions (culture, logic, biology, chemistry, physics and maths) 5 answer options; 1.5 points for the correct answer,
-0.4 for wrong, 0 points for no answer.  100 minutes of exam time.  Registration for this exam should start in the second half of the month of July / August. The test takes place simultaneously in all Italian universities that offer an English-taught degree program in Medicine and Surgery, as well as in testing sites around the world.

Students admitted to the degree in Medicine and Surgery must also demonstrate knowledge of English at level B2 or above - between 5.5 and 6.5.  To take part in the competitive admission test, candidates must register for the test on the Universitaly portal and pay an entry fee. This procedure is a mandatory requirement.

The admission exam takes place in September / October.  In October, candidates will be able to view their answer form, scores and personal data.  Early November, the national ranking list by name will be published.

Candidates who achieve a position in the list included among the number of places available for their first preference receive the status ASSEGNATO (i.e. ASSIGNED) and must enroll by the indicated deadline. Candidates who do not achieve a position in the list among the number of places available for their first preference receive the status PRENOTATO (i.e. RESERVED) for a subsequent choice.

Early November, on the basis of the ranking list and the number of places available, the names of candidates ASSIGNED and RESERVED for the programmes and universities indicated as their first choices will be published in the students’ reserved area, and each university will receive a list of these candidates.

Tuition fees ranged from 156€ to 3.800€ per year, depending on the student’s financial situation.
